| 51. | Australian Embassy I have been asked by the Australian Government to pass on our sincere sympathies and condolences to you, all the members of the United Nations Mission in Nepal, and the families of those killed in the tragic helicopter crash on 3 March 2008. The role of UNMIN is important in helping Nepal secure a long-lasting peace, and the work undertaken by UNMIN members is difficult and not without risk. This tragedy has highlighted those challenges faced by your team and I hope they know that their work and their sacrifices are appreciated. My thoughts are with you, your UNMIN team and the families of those killed in Monday’s accident at this very sad time. Yours sincerely, Graeme Lade Australian Embassy |

| 53. | TRIBUTE TO LATE MAJ FAMARA JAMMEH I knew Maj Famara Jammeh of the Gambian Army some 9 months ago when he came to this mission. My first contact with him was in Central Sector, KSK Building, Pulchowk. Prior to this time, I was very much familiar with the name Famara Jammeh. I first came across the name on 10 May 2007 while on International Military Observers’ Course in Ash Vale, Aldershot, London. While browsing through my mails, I saw my name amongst other nationals on the letter from UNDPKO dated 19 April 2007 for the deployment of monitors to this mission. Indeed, 2 names separated Famara’s name from mine. Since knowing Maj Famara Jammeh, I have personally come to understand him to be an officer and a gentle man. Through my interaction with him, I found out that he was a Nigerian trained officer. He attended his cadet’s training at the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna, and his Junior Staff Course at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji-Kaduna, Nigeria. He had hoped to attend the Senior Staff Course in July this year in Nigeria. Maj Famara Jammeh was a gentle spoken officer who displayed absolute respect and loyalty to his superiors and constituted authorities. He had an amiable and pleasant character and got on well with others. A devout and pious muslim, Maj Famara was very unassuming, kind hearted and open minded. He was very hard working and devoted to duty. Famara displayed considerable knowledge and understanding of the complex nature of working in an international environment. He was a very highly disciplined and obedient officer who showed love and respect to all and sundry. His love for his wife and family members was unquantifiably manifest in his daily life. The demise of this promising young officer is a tragic and irreplaceable loss to his family, colleagues, friends and the Gambian Armed Forces. The United Nations Mission in Nepal in particular and the United Nations in general would greatly miss his service. May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace. Amen. Habila P Zing Vintenaba (Nigeria) Central Sector, Arms Monitoring Division, UNMIN |

I remember Mr. Maharjan well from my time in UNMIN, and recall his keen intellect, graciousness and charm, and his talent and dedication to the mission, to his people and to Nepal. It is certainly a terrible tragedy for you all, for Mr. Maharjan's family, for the families of all the victims, and for all our colleagues in UNMIN.
